Baliff- an officer, similar to a sheriff or a sheriff's deputy, employed to execute laws and processes, make arrests, keep order in the court, etc.

Heir- a person who inherits or has a right of inheritance in the property of another follo-wing the recent death.

Fief- a fee or feud held of a feudal lord; a reign of land subject to feudal obligations.

Distrain- to constrain by seizing and holding goods, etc., in pledge for rent,damages, etc., or in order to obtain satisfaction of a claim.

Scutage- (in the feudal system) a payment exacted by a lord in lieu of military service due to him by the holder of a fee.

Tenement- Also called tenement house. a rundown and often overcrowded apartment house, especially in a poor section of a large city.

Amerce- to punish by imposing a fine not fixed by statute.

Trithing- Riding.

Wapentake- a subdivision of a shire or county corresponding to a hundred.

Compel- to force or drive, especially to a course of action.

Chattels- Law. a movable article of personal property.

Postpone- To put off to a later time.

Burgage- a tenure whereby burgesses or townspeople held lands or tenements of the king or other lord, usually for a fixed money rent.

Escheat- the reverting of property to the state or some agency of the state, or,as in England, to the lord of the fee or to the crown, when there is afailure of persons legally qualified to inherit or to claim.
